Mental Strategies for
There’s no doubt that your overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms are physical. But there are mental strategies that may help you control the urge to go. Try these methods for managing OAB symptoms!
Focus your attention on a complex mental task Try reciting all of the words to a childhood song. Or practice giving directions to your house from different locations. Work in a large office? See if you can remember everyone’s first and last name. Or for even more of a challenge, try counting backward from 99 by threes.
Practice being mindful Being mindful means focusing on the present moment. Mindfulness has many benefits, but it takes practice. Try taking a walk and paying attention to what you see, hear and smell around you. Notice your thoughts, then let them pass and move on to the next moment. Living moment to moment can help you see your urges to urinate as sensations of your body that don’t have to preoccupy you.
Ask your healthcare professional how mental strategies may fit into your OAB treatment plan.
